ANA promotes self-sufficiency for Native Americans by providingdiscretionary grant funding for community-based projects and training andtechnical assistance to eligible tribes and Native organizations in threeprogram areas: Social and Economic Development Strategies, Native Languages, and Environmental Regulatory Enhancement.

  • Hello and welcome to the 2024 Project Planning & Development On-Demand Training for the Administration for Native Americans. This course has been developed by the ANA Regional Training and Technical Assistance Centers.
  • I'm excited to be your trainer for the PPD On-Demand Training. My name is Eric Watson, and I'm the Training Manager for the Alaska Region Training and Technical Assistance Center.
  • The team at the Alaska Region TTA Center is small but mighty. Our Regional Director for the Center is Angela Camos, the Technical Assistance Manager is Larry Kairaiuak, and our Communication Specialist is Cassidy Blankenship.
  • Our team works remotely in South Central Alaska, and there are several ways to contact us. By visiting our website at www.anaalaska.org, you will have access to our calendar for training events, technical assistance services, and the ability to sign up for our newsletter. You can also visit our Facebook page, or call us at 800-948-3158.
  • During this training, we will cover the following learning objectives. This is not an exhaustive list, but it will give you an idea of how the curriculum is structured. This list will be a blueprint for us to follow during the Project Planning & Development Training.
  • Supplemental materials for the PPD training can be found in the Resources tab of the training website or on the following Google Drive link. These documents include templates, resources, the manual, presentation, and other helpful materials we're going to discuss. Please note that we've also included last year's ANA funding announcements on this drive as a reference, but do not use these for future ANA applications. Use only the current funding announcements once they're published, which we anticipate will be in 2025.
  • Now, let's look at the ANA Funding Opportunities ANA supports three priority areas.
  • They are the Social and Economic Development Strategies, otherwise known as SEDS, Native Languages and Environmental. Within these three priorities are five funding opportunities. The Social and Economic Development Strategies, or SEDS, is a nationally competitive funding opportunity. The priority for SEDS is to promote social wellbeing, perpetuation of culture, and economic self-sufficiency. Projects can be up to three years in length, and 300,000 annually. The project year begins on September 30th, and ends on September 29th. The SEDS Alaska Funding Opportunity, also known as SEDS-AK, is very similar to the national SEDS. However, only Alaska native tribes and tribal nonprofits are eligible to apply. The purpose of this grant is to provide targeted support for village-specific projects to improve and strengthen the administrative and management capacity of Alaska native village governments. Projects can be up to 900,000, and up to three years in length. The project year begins on September 30th, and ends on September 29th. One of ANA's language grants is the Preservation and Maintenance, also known as P&M. The ANA P&M funding opportunity supports continued use and vitality of native languages, including increasing fluency, developing curricula, and teacher certification. Awards can be up to 900,000, and up to three years in length. The other language grant available is the Esther Martinez Immersion, or EMI Program, which supports the ability of native language survival schools and language nests to conduct language immersion instruction. Applicants must submit signed documents certifying at least three years of experience operating NIT Language Nest or survival schools. Projects can be up to 300,000 annually, and up to five years in length. Lastly is the Environmental Regulatory Enhancement or ERE Grant. This funding opportunity supports planning, developing, and implementing programs designed to improve the capability of tribal governing bodies to regulate their own environmental programs. Quality pursuant of federal and tribal laws. Projects can be up to 900,000, and up to three years in length.
  • This table outlines all of the ANA funding opportunities. Please note that you can only have one active grant under each Federal Assistance Listing Number. For example, if you currently have a Preservation and Maintenance award, you are not eligible to apply for another P&M award or an Esther Martinez award until your current project is completed.
