Video 3: Long Term Community Goal

This section describes the long-term community goal, where theyare found and how to use them in designing a project. An example is provided.

Long-term community goals are a vision of an ideal community andthe foundation for all projects. They are established by community members anddescribe conditions in specific focus areas or dimensions. This vision growsand changes over time as goals are achieved and new priorities are identified,as well as when community members participating in the process change. Long-term goals of residential or geographic communities often are found inCommunity Comprehensive Plans. They also are components of Community StrategicPlans.

Subsets of a larger community (youth, elders, single parents forexample) may have long-term goals that they have created for their subsetcommunity. Communities that are the staff of an organization can createlong-term goals for the organization and strategies for pursuing achievement ofthose goals. The community that is involved in creating and pursuing a set oflong-term goals needs to be as well defined as the goals themselves.

  • Hello and welcome to the ANA Project Planning and Development on Demand Training series.
  • This is Video 3: Long-Term Community Goal.
  • Your long-term community goal is the ideal vision for your community. It's inclusive and guided by your community. You may have to identify a long-term community goal for your project, but these can also sometimes be found in a comprehensive or strategic plan. Some organizations may not have updated this in a while, so if you find yourself blowing dust off the strategic plan, it might be a good idea to update it. If your strategic plan is older than 10 years, you may want to think about updating it.
  • Here's an example of a well-written long-term community goal. Although the goal can be broad, honing it in and being specific might be a good idea. It's recommended to keep it at one to two sentences in length and identify specific groups when possible. Remember, your long-term community goal includes everyone in your community and is an ideal vision of where you would like to be.
  • Here are some other examples of long-term community goals created for specific ANA funding opportunities. For example, a long-term community goal that can be used in a language proposal could focus on community fluency with your language. As goals are broad statements involving the entire community, your goal would have everyone in that community speaking the language.
  • For Activity 2, we'd like you to use the concepts discussed in this section to create a long-term community goal. Use the format we discussed. Keep it in one sentence in length, and remember to include everyone in your community in this vision. It's also important to list how you document this consensus, such as meeting minutes or survey notes. Ways that you've engaged your community. Again, if you don't currently have a long-term community goal, write down a goal identified through your community engagement that was the highest priority for that group. If one is currently available, you can use that, but include where you found it and how it was developed.
